Sussex Jewish Records works on a subscription basis. A certain amount of general information is available free of charge, but if you would like to access the records we have indexed and our photographs, these are behind a paywall. This is because we need to cover various expenses involved in accessing and indexing the records themselves, as well as additional costs such as website hosting and cemetery clearance. Please read on to find out more.
If you have Jewish family history in Sussex, we would love to hear from you. Over time we are hoping to add to the database individual family histories, photos and anecdotes that other users can search and reference. We hope that these will enhance our users understanding of Sussex's Jewish families, put faces and stories to names, and help users make connections with each other. All contributions will be fully acknowledged and cited. Please use the contact details below to get in touch.
To date have indexed civil marriage registers from 1839 to 1922, and expect to add a further 17 years of records through to 1939 over the next few weeks.
Work has begun to photograph the headstones at the old (and currently very overgrown) Florence Place cemetery. There are photographs of approximately 60 gravestones on the database to date.
In cooperation with Brighton & Hove Hebrew Congregration, we are currently establishing the scope of the surviving records of Brighton's Orthodox community including ketubot, marriage authorisations and mohel records.
We are looking for volunteers to help with the project in various different capacities from cemetery clearance to photography, record indexing, copyright clearance, fundraising, publicity, social media and outreach. If you think you can help, we'd be delighted to hear from you.
